What is Aromatherapy and is it for You?
○ If you appreciate the pleasant aroma of scented candles, baths,
massages, or of sachets in your closets and dressers, then aromatherapy
is probably for you.
○ If you make use of scented oils, you may be practicing holistic alternative medicine without even knowing it.
○
Our sense of smell can actually help us relax, reduce pain and
inflammation, increase energy and circulation, sleep well, focus our
attention better, and improve our mood.
○ The oils we use in aromatherapy are called essential oils.
○ Some are synthetic, others are pure. Pure essential oils are the oils of choice because they are not made with chemicals.
○
It is important not to use essential oils directly on your skin. Lavender and Tea Tree oil are the exceptions. They
are highly concentrated and our skin absorbs everything it comes into
contact with.
○ Do not allow children to use essential oils without the supervision of an adult who is knowledgeable.
○ Essential oils are flammable.
○ It is best to learn all about essential oils before using them and/or to consult a practitioner.
○ Essential oils must be used with care and some are harmful. They are not meant for internal use.
○
An oil, called carrier oil, is used as a
base and a few drops of essential oil are added to it. Dilute, dilute,
dilute!
○ Note:
Pregnant women ought to be very careful around essential oils. If you
are pregnant or have a medical condition, consult your health
professional before using them.
○
Only you and your health professional know your condition. Pregnancy,
allergies, medications, and health conditions ought to be taken into
consideration before using Essential Oils.
Enhance Happiness Bath Oil
○ Add 6 drops of Bergamot, 6 drops of Grapefruit, and 3 drops of Ylang Ylang to 2 ounces of carrier oil. Do not use it all at once.
○ Store in an amber or cobalt (dark) bottle for future use.
○ Add 7 or 8 ml or 1/4 ounce to your bath. Lie back, place cucumber slices over closed eyes, and relax a while.
Carrier Oils
Most
vegetable oils are suitable to use as carrier oils, among them,
grapeseed, almond, olive, peanut, sesame, hemp, jojoba, sunflower, and
others.
