When did Eating become so Complicated?

De-Mystifying the Omega Fats

○ Many foods contain both Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids.

○ Omega 6 fats are polyunsaturated fatty acids which include linoleic acid (LA converted to GLA and AA by our body) and are considered essential (our bodies cannot produce them)

○  Omega 3 are polyunsaturated fatty acids which include alpha-linolenic acid (ALA converted to DHA and EPA by our body)) are and considered essential (our bodies cannot produce them)

○ We get DHA and EPA from oily fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines, herring, halibut, albacore, catfish, cod, shrimp, clams, algae, krill)

○ We need to eat foods rich in Omega 3 and Omega 6 but, it is strongly recommended that we consume them based on a ratio

○  We are eating a ratio of anywhere from 14:1 to 30:1 Omega 6 to Omega 3. In other words we are consuming 14 to 30 times more Omega 6 than Omega 3 fatty acids.

○ The recommended ratio for optimum health is anywhere from 1:1 to 3:1 Omega 6 to Omega 3. It depends on the health professional you ask. There is general consensus that the ratio is not to exceed 3:

Omega 3 fatty acids are said to play an important role in:

○ Hormone production
○ Regulation of blood clotting
○ Reducing inflammation
○ Maintaining a high level of good cholesterol
○ Maintaining lowered blood pressure
○ Reducing the risk of clogged arteries
○ Reducing the risk of heart attack
○ Protecting against stroke
○ Lowering triglycerides and apoproteins (related to diabetes)
○ decreasing morning stiffness and joint tenderness commonly experienced by those with rheumatoid arthritis
○ Maintaining healthy bones
○ Helping reduce menstrual cramps
○ Reducing feelings of depression and hostility
○ Alleviating some ADHD symptoms
○ Reducing symptoms of photo dermatitis and acne (fish oils for sun rash) (flaxseed for acne)

○ It is advisable that everyone consult a health professional before taking supplements.
○ Since Omega 3 is said to act as a blood thinner, it is important that those on blood thinning medication consult a health professional before taking Omega 3 supplements
